Protoselidos hosted the pulmonologist Dr. Haris Armevtis who, among other things, mentioned the dust but also the bronchial singing.
He first mentioned that our lives have changed in recent years as the days we have high dust episodes are increasing more and more.
"It is a phenomenon of climate change, that is, it is the phenomenon of desertification. Desert areas have increased relative to arable land. In some climatic conditions with strong winds, the dust rises and makes its long journey of many thousands of kilometers from Africa and travels towards us and our neighboring regions. In this journey the smallest particles survive. These are the ones that can penetrate the filtering mechanism of the respiratory system, enter the lung and create these inflammation phenomena with the known consequences" explained Dr. Armeutis.
He added that they know the days when the dust phenomenon exists and how patients suffering from chronic respiratory diseases can become deregulated. "On days when there are high levels of dust globally, visits to the first aid increase and so do deaths. Those who do not have a problem can be affected with symptoms of headache, feeling tired, burning eyes and runny nose."
Asked what these particles contain, he answered that "on their way, these particles are enriched with various substances, either chemical or toxic, on their journey. The dust that comes to our country is toxic, we have to realize this and unfortunately the things we can do are very specific. The most basic thing is to limit our activities on the days when this phenomenon exists. The high-protection mask that greatly reduces the penetration of these particles can help, and this is also a recommendation for vulnerable groups."
