The fire department sees arson behind the fire that broke out yesterday afternoon despite the Akourdalia community in Paphos.

The fire broke out in three different areas in an inaccessible area. Speaking on state radio, the press representative of the fire department, Andreas Kettis, stated that it is clear from the indications alone that it was arson.

He pointed out that in order to deal with the fire that was moving threateningly towards the Akourdalia community, the entire fire department of the Pafos district was mobilized. It was even deemed necessary to call forces from Larnaca to cover the needs of Paphos.

Mr. Kettis described the frequency of fires as unprecedented. All the firefighters he said are on a 24-hour basis, they are on their feet, to deal with successive fires from one province to another. He also pointed to the understaffing issues facing the agency and personnel management.
