EDEK issued an announcement regarding immigration and Cyprus as an attractive immigration destination.
This announcement:
Limiting the access of asylum seekers to the labor market and cracking down on undeclared work, measures to stop Cyprus being an attractive immigration destination
The government's decision, that the asylum seeker has access to the labor market after nine months have passed since the submission of the application for asylum, is correct, as it reinforces the efforts to stop Cyprus being considered an attractive immigration destination.
And this is because, a large number of asylum seekers are illegal economic migrants, who abuse the asylum application procedures in order to secure the economic benefits that the whole process offers.
EDEK, in addition, reiterates that undeclared work must be resolutely suppressed, which pushes illegal economic immigrants to remain in Cyprus, as long as they live rudimentarily, but also creates a category of workers without rights and insurance and a category of employers who benefit illegally and deprive them of income from the state.
The goal of EDEK is to achieve a balance between the state's obligation to protect national security, the social fabric, demography and the economy and the moral duty to offer hospitality and protection to our fellow human beings, who really need protection.
