Police are investigating an explosion that occurred in a car in Larnaca about half an hour after midnight, with preliminary examinations indicating that it was caused by an improvised explosive device.
Specifically, according to the Police, the explosion occurred in a car owned by a 74-year-old man, used exclusively by a 49-year-old woman, which was parked in the parking lot of an apartment building.
"Members of the Police and Fire Department arrived at the scene and extinguished the fire that broke out in the car after the explosion," it said.
According to preliminary examinations, it is added, "the explosion was caused by an improvised explosive device, while a plastic container was found which appears to contain flammable material."
According to the Police, the explosion and fire caused minor damage to two other vehicles parked in the parking lot of the apartment building, as well as to the masonry.
Further examinations will be carried out this morning while the Larnaca Medical Examiner's Office is investigating the case.
