Oral Cancer Prevention Campaign - Free public screening

The Dental Services of the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Clinic of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of the General Hospital of Nicosia, organize for the 5th consecutive year information and prevention campaign for oral cancer, from 4 to 10 December 2017, according to an announcement by Office T .

As part of the campaign on Friday, December 8, 2017, a free examination of the public will be offered through the mobile dental unit outside the Hospitals of Nicosia, Limassol, Old Hospital of Larnaca and Paphos.

Throughout the campaign, relevant information material will be distributed to all Dental Clinics operating in public hospitals, as well as to the stand of the Nicosia General Hospital, while training seminars will be organized for Cypriot dentists in collaboration with the Pancyprian Cypriot O the Dental Schools of Athens and Thessaloniki.

In Cyprus, during the period 2000-2014, there were 468 new cases of cancer of the lip, tongue, mouth, salivary glands, tonsils and oropharynx.

It is also reported that recent data from the World Health Organization (WHO) indicate that in 2012 in the countries of the European Union were recorded 73,014 new cases of cancer of the mouth, lips and oropharynx, as well as 28,213 deaths.

The risk of developing oral cancer increases especially after the age of 40, while the main predisposing factor for its occurrence is smoking. Clinically, oral cancer occurs in the form of a white or red plaque, as well as in the form of a sore or tumor, most commonly on the tongue and on the floor of the mouth. Oral cancer can be diagnosed in time through the proper self-examination that must be done by everyone once a month, but also through regular visits to the dentist every six months, the announcement concludes.
