Eleni Stavrou: Declared MEP

The Director General of the Ministry, Dr. Kostas Constantinou, as the General Superintendent of the Election of Members of the European Parliament, this morning proclaimed Ms. Eleni Stavrou as an elected member of the European Parliament, based on the Laws on the Election of Members of the European Parliament, in combination with the Election of Members of the House of Representatives Laws.

During the announcement of Ms. Stavrou, the Election Commissioner said the following: 

"Because Mr. Lefteris Christoforou, who was elected as a Member of the European Parliament, was appointed as a member of the European Court of Auditors, with the result that the seat he held as a Member of the European Parliament will be vacant, from November 2, 2022.

And because Mr. Lefteris Christoforou had been elected a member of the European Parliament with the combination of the Democratic Alarm.

And because according to article 35(1) of the Election of Members of the House of Representatives Law, the provisions of which are applied, mutatis mutandis, by virtue of article 27 of the Election of Members of the European Parliament Law, the vacant seat is filled within 45 days at the most, with the declaration by the General Election Commissioner as a member of the European Parliament of the person alive at the time of the declaration of the candidate of the combination of the above party, who, proven at the time the seat becomes vacant, still belongs to the same party and who would be elected in the elections for the nomination of the Members of the European Parliament, if the holder of the vacant seat had not received more preference crosses.

And because Mr. Nikos Tornaritis, who still belongs to the Democratic Alarm and is the immediately following in order of success and unelected candidate of the above combination, did not accept the seat.

And because the vacated seat is occupied by the next in line of success unelected candidate of the above combination, Mrs. Eleni Stavrou, who still belongs to the Democratic Alarm.

Therefore, I, Kostas A. Konstantinou, General Superintendent of Elections of Members of the European Parliament, declare Ms. Eleni Stavrou as an elected member of the European Parliament and her name is published in the Official Gazette of the Republic, in accordance with the provisions of the Electoral Legislation."

MEP Eleni Stavrou, in her statement to journalists, said the following:

"I am happy that from today I will serve my country as a member of a leading international institution, the European Parliament. First of all, I thank the people of the Democratic Alarm for trusting me with their vote.

I thank the President of the Republic and the President of my party for the support and trust that surrounded me from the very beginning. I thank the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Ioannis Kasoulidis, who was a good teacher for me. I thank my friend and colleague Nikos Tornaritis for the opportunity he gave me.

I will succeed dear Lefteris Christoforou, an excellent servant of the country, and I believe that with my academic knowledge, experiences and qualifications, and my tenure in the Parliamentary Committees of Defense and European Affairs, I will succeed."
