Police in Larnaca made eleven arrests yesterday in connection with the brawl and shooting last Saturday near the Larnaca Police Headquarters, while a raid was also carried out at the Central Prisons and a suspect was arrested.
One of those arrested was charged in writing and dismissed. Ten remain in custody and are expected to appear in court today. Five were arrested for interfering in a judicial process, while the rest were arrested for participating in a criminal organization and other related offenses.
These are 8 Greek Cypriots and 2 foreigners. The foreigners were performing guard duties in a building where a search was conducted by members of the Police.
According to information, members of the special anti-terrorist unit, the MMAD and the Larnaca TAE raided homes and premises as part of the ongoing investigations in relation to what took place last Saturday and in the context of combating organized crime.
Last night, strong police forces raided the Central Prisons and handcuffed a 23-year-old undertrial who had been arrested for attempted murder committed last July in Larnaca.
According to information, it is not ruled out that further arrests will be made, while those already arrested are being held at various police stations throughout Cyprus.
On Saturday night, as part of the investigations that followed at various premises in Larnaca after the fight that took place in the afternoon of the same day in the city center, the Police had arrested three foreigners aged 27, 28 and 29. The court ordered that the 27-year-old be released while ordering the detention of the other two for a period of 4 days. Yesterday, the case was registered at the Larnaca District Court and was set for February 4, with the two suspects remaining in pre-trial detention until then.
The 48-year-old man, who was hospitalized at the city's general hospital with injuries to his head and other parts of his body due to his participation in the fight, is also being held in custody for 8 days.
The case under investigation of Saturday's brawl concerns the commission of 13 offenses. Specifically, conspiracy to commit a felony, conspiracy to commit a misdemeanor, illegal possession and transportation of a firearm, illegal possession and transportation of explosives, extortion, demanding property with threats, participation in a criminal organization, participation and acceptance of committing offenses, assault causing serious bodily harm, threat, possession of an offensive instrument, carrying a knife, carrying a weapon to incite terror.
