At around 9 a.m. yesterday, information was received regarding a third-country fishing vessel, which was fishing in the sea area of Limassol, within the EEZ of Cyprus. A Port and Maritime Police vessel immediately set sail to locate the fishing vessel, while a helicopter from the Police Air Operations Unit also went to the area.
The fishing vessel was located by the L&N Police vessel, in the sea area 30 nautical miles southwest of Cape Zevgari. It was found that there were six people on board.
Accompanied by the L&N Police vessel, the fishing vessel arrived at the Port of Limassol at around 5pm. Following a relevant inspection, officers of the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research issued an extrajudicial fine of €8,000 to the person in charge of the vessel, while they proceeded to confiscate fishing gear and a number of caught fish (tons) that were located on the vessel.
After the fine was paid, the fishing vessel departed for its country of origin.
