The Famagusta District Court yesterday sentenced a 37-year-old man to 14 months in prison, after he was found guilty of the offenses of animal cruelty and illegal residence in the Republic.
This is a case that was revealed on the afternoon of May 7, 2025, following information received by the Police regarding the dismemberment of an animal in the parking lot of an apartment building in Famagusta.
Police officers immediately went to the scene, where they found a dismembered animal, as well as tools used in the act. The animal, according to the Veterinary Services, was identified as a kangaroo.
During the examinations, it also emerged that the convicted person was residing illegally in the territory of the Republic of Cyprus, after his request for asylum was rejected in 2022.
The imposition of a prison sentence for a case of animal abuse is a clear and resounding message that such acts are treated with the utmost seriousness and that the legislation is strictly enforced, without any tolerance.
The Cyprus Police, and in particular the Animal Police, in close cooperation with the Veterinary Services, continues with consistency and determination to investigate every complaint concerning abuse, illegal possession or any form of violence against animals.
The protection and welfare of animals is an integral part of public safety and respect for the values of our society. No crime against animals is "negligible" and none goes unpunished.
The Police calls on the public to continue to cooperate and to immediately report any relevant information, contributing actively to the prevention and fight against such phenomena.
