The Government's efforts are to make Cyprus energy independent, said the Minister of Energy, Trade and Industry Giorgos Papanastasiou, in his speech at the 11th Energy Symposium. He however emphasized that the autonomy of a state is not only related to the finds and wealth, which is in deposits or anywhere else, but should be combined with infrastructure projects so that this wealth can come to the surface and go to the markets.

He added that this wealth should come to Cyprus so that there can be production from cheap energy.

"This is our purpose, that's why we insist on infrastructure," he said.

He emphasized that the time has come for energy projects especially for Cyprus, with its small and isolated energy market.

"The effort we are making today to draw up and implement a long-term, integrated and sustainable energy strategy is really great," he said.

He added that this strategy requires coordination and good cooperation between the public and private sectors, in order to effectively and adequately address the major challenges of the energy sector, which concern not only prices and security of energy supply, but also to the important measures required to mitigate climate change.
