A decrease in the percentage of internet users who used online education tools or attended online courses was recorded in Cyprus in 2024, while the EU average recorded an increase, according to data released by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.
Cyprus was in fact the country with the second lowest rate of utilization of such tools by internet users after Romania.
Specifically, in 2024, 11% of internet users in Cyprus reported in an annual survey that they had taken an online course or used online educational material in the previous three months. Compared to 2023, the percentage decreased by 5 percentage points from 16%.
Over the same period, the corresponding percentage at EU level increased from 30% in 2023 to 33% in 2024, an increase of 3 percentage points.
Among Member States, online education was least widespread in Romania (10%), Cyprus (11%) and Bulgaria (17%).
Ireland was the country with the highest proportion of internet users engaged in online learning (61%), followed by the Netherlands (59%) and Finland (53%).
Regarding how users in the EU were utilizing online learning opportunities in 2024, 18% of the total stated that they had taken an online course while 29% stated that they had used online educational materials.
Online courses were most prevalent in Ireland (36%), Finland and Spain (both 32%), while the use of online educational materials was most prevalent in the Netherlands (53%), Ireland (52%) and Finland (46%).
In Cyprus, approximately 10% of internet users attended online courses in 2024, while again approximately 10% used online educational material.
