The Paphos Police are conducting intensive investigations regarding the murder case involving a 41-year-old victim and her estranged husband, aged 48, in Paphos.
According to the Assistant Police Director of Paphos Operations, Michalis Nikolaou, the 48-year-old is under eight-day detention at the Paphos General Hospital, where he is being treated.
Mr. Nikolaou told KYPE that investigations are continuing in the friendly and family environment of the 41-year-old and the 48-year-old, as well as in the area where the crime was committed.
He said that more than 40 statements are expected to be taken from the family and friends of the 48-year-old and 41-year-old woman.
Closed monitoring circuits in the area will also be investigated, while scientific tests will also be carried out. As part of the examinations, the telecommunication data of both the victim and the suspect will be investigated, he added.
As mentioned during the arrest process of the suspect and according to the claims of the 48-year-old suspect, the victim had visited him at his home on Friday morning to talk about the problems between them.
During their meeting, according to the suspect's claims, the 41-year-old asked him for a sum of money in order to withdraw the complaint she had filed against him on June 11 at the Office of the Family Violence Unit at the Paphos Police Department.
He refused and started an intense argument between them, as reported by the 48-year-old, who claimed that he was attacked first by the victim. After that, he reported, he lost consciousness and does not know what happened.
The 48-year-old's defense attorney did not object to the eight-day detention request.
In the meantime, the Minister of Justice Marios Hartsiotis ordered an investigation into the femicide committed on Friday in Paphos, in order to establish whether there was collusion by the Police.
In his statements, Mr. Hartsiotis assured that if the investigation proves that there is any negligence on the part of the Police, the responsibilities will be assigned.
In the meantime, two members of the Police were placed on suspension, in the context of the disciplinary investigation that is being conducted after the murder of a 41-year-old victim in Pafos province on Friday morning. The disciplinary investigation concerns a total of seven members of the Police.
According to the Spokesman of the Police Headquarters, Cyprus Christos Andreou after the preliminary report of the officer appointed on Friday to investigate whether the Police responded to the phone calls in relation to the case of premeditated murder under investigation committed in Paphos, it appears that the issue needs further investigation.
An investigating officer has therefore been appointed, who will conduct a disciplinary inquiry into seven members of the Police.
At the same time, according to Mr. Andreou, the investigating officer is called upon to establish whether the appropriate actions were taken for the timely search and arrest of the suspect for the execution of an issued arrest warrant, following a relevant complaint by the victim regarding domestic violence crimes.
Furthermore, it is recalled that the death of the 41-year-old woman, according to the results of the autopsy performed on her body, was due to internal bleeding caused by a cutting and piercing instrument. The 41-year-old had two minor children aged 2 and 12 whose responsibility the Welfare Office took over.
