The discussion of regulations regarding the management of municipal waste continued, on Wednesday, in the Environment Committee of the Parliament.
In his statements after the meeting, the Chairman of the Committee and Chairman of the Movement of Ecologists - Citizens' Cooperation, Charalambos Theopemptou, stated that the discussed legislation will bring major changes in the way of household waste management.
He explained that the citizens will have the legal obligation to recycle and it will be obligatory for each house to take out not only the bag with the recyclable materials and the bag with the papers, but also to use a special bin in which the leftovers will be put. which will be converted to biogas through an anaerobic process.
Biogas is a renewable energy source because it can be used to generate electricity, he said, adding that the material left behind can be dried, ground and sold to nurseries as topsoil.
In addition, Mr. Theopemptou said the possibility of setting up small organic waste management units in various areas to serve residents should be considered, generating electricity for their communities at extremely low costs, as well as soil conditioner. "We have a tremendous opportunity to do advanced things and help people reduce their electricity costs and improve soil quality," he said.
Answering a question about the garbage fees, Mr. Theopemptou explained that, based on what has been voted, the local authority will be able to charge a cleaning fee for a house, but in terms of housing, no one will pay a garbage fee .
"If we remove the recyclable materials, paper, leftovers, bottles, batteries, then we will have to get a special bag from the Municipality to place what is left", he pointed out, adding that this bag will have some price. "The money we spend on waste management, which exceeds 150 euros and reaches up to 180, will be dramatically reduced," he said.
Asked about the system implemented by the Municipality of Aglantzia, Mr. Theopeptou emphasized that this is very different from what the Parliament is discussing, explaining that the bag provided by the Municipality of Aglantzia also includes organic waste and leftovers, while in the Parliament it is being discussed the introduction of a special waste bin. This implies a tremendous reduction in housing costs, he concluded.
