Temperature drop, significantly strengthened wind field, rains, storms, this will be the landscape that will compose the weather today, Friday, while tomorrow, Saturday, a slight increase in temperature is expected, a temporary weakening of the wind field but rains are expected. On Sunday, the wind field strengthens again, rains, isolated storms, snow in the higher mountains. The same scenario will continue on Monday and Tuesday, but Cyprus will again be affected by a cold air mass.
This was stated to CNA by Meteorology Department Officer Andreas Chrysanthou, when asked about today's weather phenomena following the yellow warning issued by the Meteorology Department, adding that "today we expect to have a significantly strengthened wind field."
"Already in Paphos we have very strong to strong winds and temporarily we have had gusts up to gale force. A wind field, which will be generalized and we will generally have very strong to strong winds of 6-7 Beaufort, with gale force gusts up to 8 Beaufort throughout the island," he said. "There is a warning that came into effect at 8 and will be in effect until 10 pm. All areas will be more or less affected by this wind field and for this reason there is no spatial determination," he pointed out.
He also mentioned that we will have light to moderate rains, some isolated storms already occurred in the morning, and they will continue to occur in the coming hours.
"So we will have local rains with isolated storms and snow in our highest mountains. There is already snowfall on the highest peaks of Troodos and we expect lower altitudes to gradually receive snow as well," he added.
Regarding the drop in temperature compared to yesterday, Mr. Chrysanthou said that yesterday it ranged between 19 and 20 degrees, today between 15 and 17 degrees.
"Yesterday we even went up to 23 in the coastal areas. So, we perceive a drop of almost 5 to 6 degrees in general throughout the territory, a much greater drop in the higher mountains, where the maximum temperature today for our mountains may remain in single digits, close to 4 degrees, which compared to yesterday is a drop of almost 10 degrees. So we perceive a drop in temperature, a significantly strengthened wind field, rains, storms. This will be the relevant landscape that will compose the weather today, Friday," he added.
When asked what the weather conditions are expected to be in the coming days, Mr. Chrysanthou said that a slight increase in temperature is expected tomorrow, Saturday, and a temporary weakening of the wind field.
"But we will have rain. Less chance of storms. We will also have snow in our highest mountains. Sunday, the wind field is strengthening again, rain, isolated storms, snow in our highest mountains," he said. On Sunday, he added, we will remain at Saturday temperatures. "On Monday, the same scenario, that is, local rains again, isolated storms, but we will be affected again by a cold air mass. Temperature drop on Monday, possibly noticeable. Temperature drop Monday, Tuesday. These days will be with very low temperatures compared to today," he further stated.
Monday, Tuesday, according to Mr. Chrysanthou, "we may have rains and storms and snow again in our highest mountains. These are much more favorable conditions than Monday and then to get snow in our highest mountains."
Asked whether, in addition to these strong weather phenomena, other phenomena that are usually followed by such weather conditions are expected to appear, Mr. Chrysanthou said that in an enhanced wind field, a tornado cannot be ruled out in both coastal areas and mountainous areas where wind channeling exists.
"We must emphasize that hail cannot be ruled out in a storm. It is also a parameter in our weather report. It is these phenomena that will compose, I would say, the weather scenario during the five-day period," he concluded.
