The house of director Panikos Chrysanthous was completely destroyed by yesterday's fire in Pelathousa, Paphos. Along with it, his precious archive was burned.
The Deputy Minister of Culture Yiannis Toumazis visited today the destroyed house of the Cypriot director, which he used both as a storage space for his archive and as a production space for the dozens of films and documentaries he has created.
Mr. Toumazis appeared particularly moved, characterizing Panikos Chrysanthous as an important chapter for the culture of the place. The State will stand by him in various ways, he said, and announced that a coordinated effort by the Ministry of the Interior, the Ministry of Social Welfare and the Ministry of Culture is underway to support the director so that he can create again and get back on his feet, as he said .
Officials from the Turkish Cypriot property management service have already arrived at the site and will find a place for the director's temporary accommodation until the repair of the residence that had been granted to him for years as a refugee beneficiary. Mr. Toumazis assured that the state will support Mr. Chrysanthous in various ways in order to return to his work stronger, he said.
The director Panikos Chrysanthou stated that what was inside the house was burned, adding, however, that a large part of the visual material has been saved since he had copies that are kept in another place.
However, important audio files were lost among them and interviews with Pavlos Liasidis. Mr. Chrysanthou noted that he is in a stage of contemplation, to see what he was able to save and how he will continue.
Unfortunately, he added, you start from the beginning given that the material exists. I'm a realist thinking about what happened. Nothing can be done anymore and we will live with the new facts, he concluded.
