The images of the new incident of abuse and horrible killing of a cat in the village of Ergates in the province of Nicosia can only cause shock. The barbarity of some of our fellow human beings with which they treat animals is disgusting.
As we were informed by people directly involved, yesterday afternoon a couple horribly killed the cat of their neighbors and then threw their unrecognizable body in the garbage.
The nearest police station was immediately notified, members of which asked the cat's family to take her lifeless body to the station. As we are informed, the case remained until then and did not proceed, with the family still waiting for the Police to mobilize for the crime committed against the living since yesterday afternoon. We believe that there was oligarchy on the part of the police.
We call on the authorities to act immediately and decisively, to bring the case to justice for exemplary punishment of those responsible for this act. If there was a real Animal Police the case would already be before the Attorney General.
We repeat for the thousandth time that our way of behaving towards animals is a sample of our culture. We wonder when some people will understand that animals have feelings and rights and we must respect them if we want to be called a civilized people.
We will monitor the matter closely until justice is done. We expect the Chief of Police to personally take over the case and to take all legal measures for justice.
