Cyprus ranks below the European average in terms of both diesel and unleaded 95 octane prices, according to data from the European Commission (Weekly Oil Bulletin, 06/04/2026) published yesterday. It is noted that the most expensive price of unleaded 95 in the EU is found in Switzerland (2362,82 €/1000 liters), Denmark (2322,78 €/1000 liters), Germany (2241,00 €/1000 liters), Greece (2073,00 €/1000 liters), France (2031,62 €/1000 liters). Cyprus is in 25th place with 1,513 euros/liter.
In the case of diesel, the highest prices are found in the Netherlands (€2584,74/1000 liters), Denmark (€2559,12/1000 liters), Germany (€2434,00/1000 liters), Belgium (€2309,67/1000 liters), Finland (€2257,95/1000 liters) while Cyprus is in 21st place with the average price fluctuating at €1844,00/1000 liters.
In relation to the methodology applied for Cyprus for fuel price data published in the Weekly Oil Bulletin, it is noted that these are based on weekly data collection (every Monday, with a report by Tuesday at 10:00 a.m.) by the Energy Service of the Ministry of Energy, Trade and Industry. The prices are derived from a weighted average, which is calculated based on data from 25 selected fuel stations, which have been determined by a relevant decree and represent approximately 8% of total consumption.
As stated in the relevant European Commission link, the methodology includes two stages: initially the average price per company is calculated, taking into account the sales of each gas station, and then these prices are weighted based on the sales share of each company in the total market per fuel.
Despite the fact that Cyprus is not among the expensive EU countries in terms of fuel prices, increases in retail sales prices continue to be recorded, as shown by the price comparison of the Consumer Protection Service's Fuel Price Overview Bulletins. According to the most recent Bulletin dated April 9, the average retail prices of fuel with taxes were €1.513 for unleaded 95 octane and €1.844 for diesel. Compared to the average prices recorded in the Bulletin on March 12, the price for unleaded has increased by 16 cents and for diesel by 38 cents.
It is noted that current prices are also formed with the application of the special consumption tax on motor fuels for the months of April to June 2026, by 8,33 cents per liter.
Prices until 11:30 on Good Friday morning were set according to the Fuel Price Observatory, for Unleaded 95 octane at €1,520/liter, with the most expensive at €1,599/liter and the cheapest at €1,444/liter, Cyprus-wide. Correspondingly, the average price of diesel was €1,844/liter with the cheapest at €1,747 and the most expensive at €1,899/liter.
