Mobilizations within October were announced on Thursday night by the goat and sheep breeders, who at a gathering in Choirokoitia called on the Minister of Agriculture to implement the legislation governing PDO products, especially halloumi, and declared that they were determined to avoid the five-year transitional stage.
In statements following a gathering held tonight in Choirokoitia, Giorgos Dimitriou, Secretary General of the Goat and Sheep Producers Group, called on the Minister of Agriculture "to assume the responsibilities deriving from his duties, to implement the specific legislation that governs PDO products and to cease to cover specific industries in a specific way'.
He added that "the demands of the sheep and goat farmers are specific. Firstly, the quota in goat and sheep milk should be increased from the current 20%, to 35% in February next year and to 51% in June when the transitional stage ends", indicating that based on the agreement made in the KEBE and was never implemented, sheep and goat farmers are determined to avoid the five-year transition stage.
Mr. Dimitriou also mentioned that there will be demonstrations on October 18 and called on all goat and sheep farmers to remain united in order to cope with the difficulties. "In a spirit of sobriety we will move forward for the greater good," he said.
It is noted that the gathering was attended by members of the Agriculture and Trade Committees of the Parliament with their Presidents Giannakis Gavriil and Kyriakos Hatzigianni, the Agricultural Organizations and the Association of Goat and Sheep Breeders of Cyprus with its seven groups.
