Today is a critical day for the minimum wage, since the Minister of Labour, Welfare and Social Insurance, Kyriakos Kousios, has a meeting with the employer and trade union organizations, for a last attempt to find common ground between the parties, regarding the establishment of the national minimum wage in Cyprus.

The meeting will take place at 8.30 in the morning at the Ministry of Labour, and Mr. Kousios will present his final proposal on the subject of the minimum wage to the social partners.

In fact, according to what we are informed, it is not excluded that the Minister of Labor, after submitting his draft to the social partners, will then transfer it to the Council of Ministers and specifically to the President.

During his last meeting with the SEK, PEO and DEOK trade unions, on August 9, Mr. Kousios had stated that there are still differences in the approaches between the employers' side and the trade union movement on the subject of establishing the minimum wage.

The Minister of Labor explained that his effort is to bring the opinions together, but at the end of the day, the decision will be made by the Government and the President of the Republic, who decided that there should be a national minimum wage. "The effort is to converge opinions as much as possible, because there can be no agreement. The decree will be issued with certainty, regardless of disputes", noted Mr. Kousios.
