Around 00.25 this morning, members of the Limassol Police Department during a motorized patrol in an area of Limassol, spotted a vehicle driven by a 30-year-old, moving suspiciously and signaled him to stop. The 30-year-old failed to stop and developed speed, as a result of which he lost control of the vehicle and crashed into an electric pole and came to a standstill. The 30-year-old then abandoned his vehicle and fled on foot, while he was stopped nearby. The collision caused extensive damage to both the vehicle and the pole, resulting in a temporary power outage in the area.
In a subsequent investigation, he was found in possession of 30-year-old cocaine with a gross weight of about 2.5 grams and was arrested for a self-inflicted crime. At the same time, the 30-year-old underwent a preliminary drug test, with a positive result.
Also, around 11.20 last night, information was received about a traffic collision on the Nicosia - Limassol highway, between Moni - Parekklisia. Members of the Road Accident Prevention Squad of the Police Headquarters, went to the scene, where they found a car parked on the sidewalk, outside the security lane.
The collision caused only material damage to the car, while the 44-year-old driver underwent a preliminary breathalyzer test with an indication of 120μg% instead of 22μg% which is the limit allowed by law. He was then taken to the Limassol Traffic Police for a final examination with an indication of 100μg% instead of 22μg% and was arrested for a self-inflicted crime.
Investigations are ongoing in both cases.
