CYPRUS: The Omicron variant is in full swing

How many of the cases belong to the Omicron variant

The prevalence of the Omicron variant in terms of coronavirus cases in Cyprus is almost complete, based on the latest data from the Ministry of Health.

Specifically, on January 21, of the 192 positive sample samples tested by sequencing, 165, or 86% of the samples, were Omicron variant cases.

According to the Ministry of Health, out of 133 samples of the community in the period 09/1/22 - 16/1/22, 126 samples were identified with the Omicron variant, 7 with the Delta variant, with the Omicron percentage in the community being 94,7 %. It is noted, however, that none of the 126 people were hospitalized.

At the same time, out of 59 samples sent by the hospitals of the period 1/1/22 - 17/1/22, 39 samples were identified with the Omicron variant, 7 with the Delta variant, while 13 that could not be characterized to a satisfactory degree.

It is also noted that in previous weeks 435 cases with the micron variant in Cyprus had been confirmed by sequencing.

Based on the data for the period 15 - 21 January, most cases came from the age group 6 - 11 years with 1.751, in total 13.997, followed by the group 35 to 39 years with 1.417 infections and the group 30 to 34 years with 1.359 cases.

In addition, during the sampling period 15 - 24 January, 1.690 re-infections were recorded, while during the period 8 - 14 January, a total of 567 imported cases were detected.
