Health Commissioner Stella Kyriakidou, the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) have called on the member states to immediately administer the second booster dose to everyone over 60 as well as to vulnerable groups, issuing a joint announcement.

“Our vaccines against her COVID-19 they work and offer good levels of protection against serious illness and hospitalization," Ms. Kyriakidou noted.

"As cases and hospitalizations rise again as we enter the summer season, I urge everyone to get vaccinated and get a booster dose as soon as possible. There is no time to waste," he emphasized.

"I call on Member States to immediately start providing second booster doses for everyone over 60 and for all vulnerable persons, and I urge those who are eligible to be vaccinated," he stressed.

"This is how we will protect ourselves, our loved ones and vulnerable populations," he said.

In a joint statement, ECDC and EMA recommend a second booster dose for people aged between 60 and 79 and people at high risk in the event of a new surge in cases.

As noted in the joint announcement, the second booster dose can be administered at least four months after the previous one, giving priority to those who received the booster dose more than six months ago.
