A drop in temperature and isolated rains are expected on Thursday, Panagiotis Georgiou, Meteorological Officer at the Department of Meteorology, told CNA, in view of the cold air mass “Coral”, which is expected to affect Cyprus in the coming days. However, when asked to give a forecast for next week, during which there will be many carnival events, he said that so far no rains are expected.
Mr. Georgiou said that today, until the afternoon, some isolated rains are expected, with a small chance of a storm. He noted that, if a storm occurs, hail is also likely to fall, while some snow may also be recorded in the mountains. The winds appear to be strengthening for the west coast and the north to 4-5 Beaufort, while in the rest 3-4 Beaufort.
Tonight there is a possibility of isolated rain and a little snow in the mountains, while winds are strengthening northwesterly, 4-5 Beaufort. Temperatures for tonight will range from 6 degrees inland, 9 on the coast and 0 in the higher mountains.
Limited rainfall on Tsiknopempti
Isolated rains and snow in the mountainous or semi-mountainous areas are expected on Tsiknopempti, as Mr. Georgiou said, mentioning that the winds are expected to strengthen to 4-5 Beaufort, which may temporarily reach very strong 5-6 Beaufort, while the temperatures are expected to be well below the average values of the season, perhaps 4 or even 5°C. “From 18-19 degrees we will go to 13-14”, for the interior, 15 on the coast and 5 in the higher mountains.
Asked in which areas rain is expected on Thursday, he replied that "it could be in coastal areas or even inland, but we are talking about a few phenomena today and tomorrow, it is not like yesterday's."
A further drop in temperature is expected from Friday, while more phenomena may occur on Saturday, with some local rains or even storms and snow in the mountainous and semi-mountainous areas. Asked about the amount of snowfall expected, he said that the phenomenon is not expected to be widespread.
"Nothing is expected on Sunday," he noted, stating that the weather will be mainly cloudy, but no rain is expected, with the temperature, however, remaining low, close to 10 degrees on the coast, while inland the maximum temperature of the day may reach up to 7-8 degrees.
Carnivals without rain
Asked about the weather expected next week, Mr. Georgiou, noting that it is difficult to say right now, stated that from what it appears, "there is nothing, some temporary clouds. There is no rain or anything in sight." He noted, however, that the temperature is expected to rise from Monday, to reach more normal levels within the week, that is, the average values for the season.
Precipitation for the hydrological year at 65%
Mr. Georgiou also reported that the rainfall for the current hydrological year, from October 1st until today, is only 65% of normal. He noted that the rainfall in January was quite low, at 14%, while so far February is at 26%.
