Eurostat notes that in 2020 the number of deaths in the EU had fallen sharply to 18.830 deaths, which the agency attributes to the restrictions imposed due to the pandemic. COVID-19Although deaths increased in 2021 and 2022, they did not return to pre-pandemic levels.
In Cyprus, the pandemic did not contribute to a sharp decrease in deaths (53 in 2017, 49 in 2018, 52 in 2019, 48 in 2020), however the trend in recent years has been downward (45 in 2021, 37 in 2022 and 34 in 2023).
The lowest rate of road traffic deaths per population was recorded in 2023 in Sweden (22 deaths per million inhabitants), Denmark (27) and Malta (30).
