Yesterday afternoon, an 72-year-old woman in Nicosia fell victim to a phone scam where scammers pretend to be doctors, with the scammers managing to extort a sum of €52.000 from her. The case was reported to the Police and is being investigated by the TAE Nicosia.

According to what the 72-year-old reported to the Police, around 2 p.m. yesterday, she received a phone call, on the fixed line of her home, from an unknown man, who introduced himself to her as a surgeon at the Nicosia General Hospital. The suspect allegedly asked her for the sum of €57.000 for surgery, which her son needed to undergo, who was allegedly injured in an accident, while at the same time a second person could be heard on the phone crying and telling her that he was her son and that he had an accident. A few hours later, an unknown man went to the 72-year-old's house, where he threw a bag containing €52.000 from the balcony.

On the occasion of this case as well, the Police once again recommend special attention to the public, stressing that such telephone communications and claims are false and are intended to deceive citizens and steal sums of money. It also appeals to the public, in the event that they receive a similar type of phone call, to inform the Police immediately, by contacting the nearest Police Station or the District Police Department, or the Citizen's Line, at the telephone number 1460.
