The Electronic Crime Directorate warns the citizens that there is an increase in the phenomenon of interception of accounts on Social Networking Media and especially on Viber.
In particular, several users receive a message from a person they know on Viber, informing them that they will receive a code from him and then reveal it to that person.
In essence, this code concerns the recipient's own account and not the sender of the message who is already using a compromised account of another unsuspecting victim.
With this method, they gain the recipient's trust, resulting in their own account being compromised.
The public is asked to be very careful with such messages and NOT to disclose codes received to any person.
Also, to prevent the possibility of illegal access to electronic accounts (email, Facebook, Viber, etc.), you should:
- enable two-factor authentication in the security settings
- to control the devices from which you are connected to your accounts,
- check the personal information (email and phone number) you have registered on Facebook and Instagram and in case you do not have access to any of them, delete it and also
- change passwords at regular intervals using symbols, numbers and letters. Use a separate password for each account.
On the website of the Electronic Crime Directorate, www.cyberalert.cy you can see relevant announcements on the subject, as well as information on upgrading the security settings of your accounts.
