The changes in the systems of the Department of Road Transport (TOM) were completed these days after a long delay due to the unexpected complexity of the new traffic fees. The new traffic fees are expected to take effect on December 1, while from the same day, the new method of measuring pollutants established by the EU will apply to Cyprus.
The notification provided by law by the Ministry of Transport must be made one month before the new fees take effect. These are the traffic fees that were voted by the Parliament on the 15th of last March and were foreseen that they will enter into force in the summer, due to the time required for changes in the digital systems of TOM, which will now have to calculate the fees with the existing system. of the already registered vehicles and with the new fee system, the fees for vehicles - new and imported used - which will be registered from 1 June onwards.
At the same time, the system must accept with the previous system, all vehicles that are already in dealerships and used yards, everything that will be on ships on the way to Cyprus and so on.
The software changes for the new system were completed last summer, but in tests and controls, many gaps and need for corrections were identified. This is mainly due to the significant differences both in the way of calculating the registration fee for each vehicle that will be registered, but also in the many parameters that are taken into account in order to correctly calculate the end of each car that will be registered.
Such factors, in addition to the pollutants emitted by each vehicle, are whether it is new or used, the type of engine in relation to fuel - diesel, gasoline, hybrid, etc. - but also the engine class - Euro 6, Euro 5, 5b, 5c etc.
It should also be noted that the new WLTP (Worldwide harmonized Light vehicles Test Testure) pollutant system, because it calculates pollutants with a closer approximation to real conditions than the previous one, gives increased carbon dioxide values and is therefore shaped accordingly and freight rates.
