A new case of foot-and-mouth disease has been reported at a cattle unit in Dromolaxia, announced the senior officer of the veterinary services, Sotiria Georgiadou.
Speaking to Trito, he said that five hundred cows are affected and that the unit is located just inside the 10-kilometer surveillance zone.
The number of infected units rose to 23.
He also mentioned that after the reactions of livestock farmers, a video conference was held yesterday with the officials of the European Commission's Directorate-General for Health, during which the veterinary services appealed for the killing of only the infected animals and not the entire herd.
Mrs. Georgiadou said that the response from the authorities was negative and stated that they cannot ignore rules and protocols.
Asked about the possibility of a case being detected in vaccinated animals, she said that if it is determined that this is a natural disease, the entire herd will be killed. She clarified that laboratory tests will reveal whether the virus is from antibodies from a vaccine or whether it is from a natural infection.
