An alarm was raised around 9:30 am after information about a suspicious object heading towards Cyprus. According to information from the RIK, an alarm was raised at the American embassy in Nicosia and the staff were taken to the basement as a precaution. Greek F-16s took off to intercept the suspicious object.
The alert ended shortly before 10 and the American embassy staff returned to their duties. The presence of Greek fighter jets in the air was also noticed by citizens. The Cabinet meeting scheduled for 9:30 was postponed while an emergency meeting of the National Security Council was decided at 12 noon.
