Tomatoes imported from Turkey are being sold on the market as Cypriot, deceiving consumers, according to the complaint before the Department of Agriculture.

The complaint was made by the Panagrotic Association of Cyprus as, according to the testimonies of the farmers, on tomato packaging imported by a Cypriot company, the Greek trade name of a fruit and vegetable wholesaler is written as well as the information that the country of origin of the product is Turkey.

These imported tomatoes were placed in caissons of a Cypriot cooperative, destined for retail trade. At the same time, the Panagrotic Association also attached photos to the complaint.

The Ministry of Agriculture is asked to investigate whether tomatoes from Turkey are sold as Cypriot tomatoes.

Speaking to SigmaLive, the general secretary of the association, Tasos Yipanis, said that they asked the Department of Agriculture to check whether the arrival of the products in Cyprus was legal.

In addition, as Mr. Giapanis mentioned, they request that the competent ministry proceed with an audit of the company that imports the tomatoes, as well as for placing them in the crates of a well-known Cypriot cooperative that produces tomatoes, deceiving consumers that the product is Cypriot.

"The third issue for us is moral, if it is legally legal is it also morally legal in a semi-occupied country to bring agricultural products from Turkey?" said Mr. Japanis.
