The stench in Larnaca has been strong for the last 24 hours.
A related announcement from the Municipality states that the stench is due to the movement of manure from livestock properties. The announcement states that despite the promises made, no action was taken to take measures.
This announcement:
The Municipality of Larnaca informs the public that the stench observed in the last few days in Larnaca is due to the movement of manure from livestock properties located in neighboring Municipalities and Communities and its placement in fields by farmers. These fields are outside the municipal boundaries of Larnaca and the Municipality cannot take any measures.
Despite the promises given in previous years by the competent State Services to take measures to improve the quality of the manure produced by the cowsheds and other livestock units, unfortunately no action was taken and liquid manure continues to be applied to the fields. The stench is produced during the loading, transport and placement of liquid mud (manure) in the fields, affecting the comfort and health of the city's residents and visitors.
The competent government agencies (Department of Agriculture and Department of Environment) have been informed about the serious nuisance problem that is being created in our city in order to take immediate measures against those who do not apply the correct manure disposal procedure and in the immediate plowing of the field. The Municipality has already been informed that Inspectors of the Department of the Environment are carrying out increased checks on agricultural parcels in the wider Larnaca area.
