Theologian Theodoros Kyriakou commented on the condemnation of the former Metropolitan of Kiti by the Provincial Court of Larnaca on the Front Page.
He initially stated that just yesterday he received two messages about complaints that have not yet taken the path of Justice. "This particular Hierarch comes from the school of Despots. That school that thought they had such power in their hands that no matter what they did, no one would mess with them."
He added that "in Cyprus the Church is supported - it is based in authoritarian structures and they feel that they have a lot of power in their hands. When passion also comes out we end up in such situations. Well done to the woman who made it all the way to court after all these years."
He pointed out that until now we had only heard rumours. "Previously there was a trial that was acquitted with the girl protesting and even arguing that there are other witnesses that could change the outcome of the trial."
He pointed out that "the former Kitiou does not only drag himself but also the figure he wears. It is time for the Holy Synod to respond. He may be a former Metropolitan, but he has the third degree of priesthood."
He emphasized that the Church has no other choice and the only way is to depose the specific Metropolitan. He noted that the Holy Synod can put him on holiday and thus he will not be able to officiate. "The day before yesterday he officiated at Agios Lazaros," he said.
He explained that in the past there had been other incidents of a milder nature and they were dealt with in a much harsher manner. "There is the case of Hierodeacon Stylianou", he said.
Mr. Kyriakou pointed out that these people thought they could do whatever they wanted without anyone judging them. "They said, are you going to mess with the Church, are you going to mess with your Despot? It's a sin." He added that people were afraid.
He also said that some people invented the term Hierokatigoros. "They consider that if you accuse a Priest it is a sin. If possible. To be able to do what they want and not be able to protect yourself and assert your right."
In addition, he said that the messages he receives refer to extreme situations. "In Larnaca there were rumours, but if they do not result in a judicial conviction, then they remain rumours."
Finally, he said that it is for the good of the Church because some things and some cancers must be cleansed.
