An 18-year-old learner driver, who was driving a vehicle on the Nicosia-Larnaca highway at dawn today at 185 km per hour, while the maximum speed limit is 100 kilometers, has admitted to the charges against him.
The young man also reportedly tested positive for driving under the influence of drugs.
According to the Police, the vehicle driven by the 18-year-old was stopped half an hour after midnight today, Monday, February 17, for inspection by members of the Road Accident Prevention Unit - OPOD, of the Traffic Police Department Headquarters in the Kosii - Rizelia area.
According to a representative of the Police Headquarters' Communications Branch, during the inspection it was determined that the 18-year-old driver of the car is a learner driver and was driving the vehicle without being accompanied by a licensed instructor, while he was transporting a fellow driver of his age as a passenger in violation of the terms of his learner's license.
The driver underwent a preliminary drug test "with a positive result, while the result of a final laboratory drug test is awaited."
Police members proceeded to arrest the 18-year-old, who was transferred to the Aradippou Police Station for investigation into the traffic violation case and was taken into custody.
Today the young man was brought before the Larnaca District Court where he admitted the charges against him and was released on bail.
The Court set April 2nd as the date for the start of the hearing.
