About 50 hotels operate in all the provinces of Cyprus during the New Year with a festive program, the President of the Cyprus Hoteliers Association (PASYXE) Thanos Michailidis told the Cyprus News Agency (CYPE) on Monday, estimating at the same time that in 2025 it is slightly better than 2024 for the hotel industry.
Mr. Michaelidis told KYPE that there are about 50 hotels operating in all the provinces of Cyprus during the winter and Christmas and New Year days. He noted that hotels offer festive programs on New Year's Eve, adding that "it is the winter period when Cypriots will prefer to go to hotels to have fun and welcome the new year." He also stated that there is also interest in the mountain resorts of Cyprus, where a festive program will be offered.
Asked if there are foreign tourists in the hotels of Cyprus these days, Mr. Michaelides said that foreigners who come to Cyprus in winter mostly come to enjoy the weather. "These are people who stay about ten to fifteen days on average on the island. These are mainly English people and people from central Europe, such as Germany, Poland and Austria", he added.
Asked whether the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East affected winter tourism in Cyprus, Mr. Michaelidis said that when there is instability in the neighboring areas of Cyprus, the flight schedule can be reduced and at times doubts can be created among tourists. He said that in terms of Russian tourism for the winter, before the crisis with Russia and Ukraine, there was no significant flow of tourists to Cyprus. "The big loss we measure from Russia and Ukraine is for the summer months," he noted.
Asked to assess whether 2025 will be a good year for the hotel industry, Mr. Michaelidis replied that "the messages we have received from the exhibition in London in November were quite positive" adding that the UK market is the most important for Cyprus.
"So if there is indeed a positive development there and the first half of 2025 is better than the first half of 2024, then I think that maybe 2025 will beat 2024. Of course, no thematic differences are expected, but it will probably be slightly better than 2024", he added.
