The Larnaca Permanent Criminal Court today imposed an 18-month prison sentence on the 49-year-old from Sweden, who escaped from a clinic where he was being treated in Larnaca last December.
In a previous hearing, the facts of the case were read out before the Criminal Court, while his defense attorneys spoke for a mitigation of the sentence.
It is recalled that the 49-year-old is now a prosecution witness against a 54-year-old lawyer and a 44-year-old police officer who allegedly contributed to the Swede's escape.
However, in order for the 49-year-old to become a prosecution witness, the criminal prosecution of the three defendants was resurrected on the common charge of conspiracy to commit a felony.
It is noted that the lawyer and the police officer had responded before the Criminal Court that they do not admit guilt to the six charges they face.
The lawyer faces, among other things, charges related to providing assistance to a prisoner and money laundering.
The police officer faces, among other charges, charges of providing assistance to a prisoner, abuse of power and transactions that indicate corruption.
The hearing for the two defendants will continue on June 23.
According to the facts of the case, the 49-year-old had escaped on December 22, while he was under guard at a private clinic in Larnaca.
The Swede was arrested on December 6 at Larnaca Airport, pursuant to a European Arrest Warrant issued by the Swedish authorities, in connection with financial crimes, for an amount of approximately 90 million euros, which he allegedly committed in the country.
The suspect was being treated under guard at a private clinic in Larnaca with acute gastroenteritis and chest pain when he managed to escape on the afternoon of Sunday, December 22, and was located in an apartment building under construction in the center of Larnaca on Monday, December 23.
The police officer and the lawyer were arrested on December 31, with court warrants.
