Domestic Violence: The Complaints and Arrests of September-October

The Case of Investigation of Cases and Complaints of Domestic Violence, which has been piloting the Limassol Police Department since last September, received 84 complaints in September and 96 in October and has so far made 13 and 16 arrests respectively. Very recently, another ladder was created in the province of Nicosia, consisting of 11 professionals.

This was stated by the Minister of Justice and Public Order Emily Giolitis, in a message for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, while assuring that the issue of gender and domestic violence, as well as the incorporation into legislation of all provisions of the Convention high on its priorities.

The Minister reminds that since last September, the Limassol Police Directorate has been piloting this unit with 10 Police Officers, who deal exclusively with this issue, in order to be able to respond immediately and effectively to the investigation of cases of violence.

He also noted that a recent meeting of stakeholders for the immediate elaboration of the existing bill criminalizing violence against women and girls was held, with the aim of promoting it as soon as possible for voting, and added that the Ministry is actively involved in the Government's efforts to create pioneering "House for Women", a multidisciplinary center for support and empowerment of abused women, by all relevant government agencies.

"The government and I personally will do everything possible to tackle, to the fullest extent, the phenomena of gender-based violence. "Our struggle and actions should focus on the exemplary punishment of the perpetrators, but mainly on strengthening the voice of the victims and on their persistent, firm and continuous support, protection and empowerment," he said.
