Two aftershocks have been recorded so far after the earthquake measuring 4,9 on the Richter scale according to the Director of the Department of Geological Survey Christodoulos Hatzigeorgiou, who noted speaking to KYPE that the earthquake is part of the normal seismic activity of Cyprus.
In his statements to KYPE, Mr. Hatzigeorgiou mentioned about the earthquake, which was strongly felt in the provinces of Paphos and Limassol but also in the rest of Cyprus, with a focus on the maritime area of Cyprus, 18 kilometers south-west of Paphos and a focal depth of 13 kilometers , that this is an area that gives earthquakes over time.
Indicatively, he noted that in the last thirty years, eight earthquakes of the order of 4,5 - 5,2 on the Richter Scale were recorded.
It is continued, an area that essentially joins the Cyprus arc with the transformation fault that is south of Paphos to the northern coasts that are west of Polis Chrysochous.
Mr. Hatzigeorgiou noted that this is an earthquake, which is part of the normal seismic activity of Cyprus.
Asked about this, the Director of the Department of Geological Survey of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment said that the people should be aware of the measures to take from an earthquake and be informed by the competent authority which is the Civil Defense and the information leaflets .
In cases where we have a larger earthquake what we should keep in mind is to protect ourselves, he said, adding that "if we save ourselves then we can help others."
At the time of the earthquake, he said, "it is important that we ourselves survive", since as he noted "there is not enough time to do anything else and our reaction must be immediate".
