The lowest temperatures are expected to be recorded during the three-day period of February 22-24 during the impact of the Coral cold front in Cyprus, Meteorological Officer Andreas Chrysanthou told CNA on Friday.
He reported that temperatures are expected to return to near normal levels for the season towards the end of the month, covering the three-day period of Ash Wednesday.
Asked about the course of the phenomenon so far, he said that the maximum temperature inland at 10.30 on Friday morning was approximately 8 degrees Celsius, while it is expected to reach 10 as a maximum value, "almost 9 degrees lower than Wednesday", as he noted.
He added that at the same time the temperature in the highest mountains was -1 degree, with a maximum expected temperature between 0 and 1 degree, almost 7 degrees lower than Wednesday, while in coastal areas temperatures are also expected to be 6-8 degrees lower than Wednesday.
"A further drop in temperatures is expected, especially on Sunday, Saturday and Monday, as inland the maximum temperature will not exceed 10 degrees, on the coast it will approach 10 degrees and in the higher mountains very low temperatures will be observed, which in the evening hours will probably range below -8 degrees," he noted, also speaking of a possible issuance of a relevant warning by the Department.
When asked whether the picture so far corresponds to the Department's forecasts, Mr. Chrysanthou said that the forecasts seem to be confirmed, without any particular phenomena, adding that some rain and snow are expected in mountainous and semi-mountainous areas over the weekend, while it is not ruled out that flakes may fall in some lowland areas.
"From Wednesday onwards, temperatures are expected to rise, although they will remain lower than normal temperatures for the season, with temperatures returning to close to normal levels for the season towards the end of the month, covering the three-day period of Clean Monday," he added.
