The bill for the increase of maternity leave is going for unanimous approval on Thursday, as stated by the EDEK MP Andreas Apostolou.
"We have agreed unanimously that on Thursday it will be taken to the Plenary for a vote and if things are going well it will be voted unanimously by the Plenary of the body," he said in a statement after the meeting of the Parliamentary Labor Committee.
He noted that he was asked by the competent Ministry to send it immediately for publication in the official newspaper of the state this Friday, so that its implementation can begin immediately.
"This is very important because many young mothers are at the end of their maternity leave and every day they lose it, in fact, fewer and fewer will have this right to welfare," she said.
Mr. Apostolou said that the bill is in the right direction, adding however that we are not done with our obligation to young mothers, new parents and family support.
"Our position as EDEK is that we should also look at other issues, which relate to the support of families," he said, referring to the implementation of paid parental leave in Cyprus, the support of young couples in terms of nurseries and kindergartens and the upgrading of all-day schools and the expansion of the institution.
"We will support the bill but from next week we will continue to present actions so that other measures in this direction will be presented to the Plenary as soon as possible," he concluded.
According to the new provisions of the bill, as they were analyzed by the competent Minister, the maternity leave for the second child is increased from 18 to 22 weeks and for the third child to 26 weeks.
It is noted that those women who have four or more children, the leave will remain at 26 weeks for each time.
