The first patient with West Nile virus in Cyprus this year has died, Pathologist/Infectious Diseases Specialist Aristos Aristodimou told CNA.
As he confirmed, this is a 90-year-old man with underlying diseases. Mr. Aristodimou pointed out that this is an infection of the central nervous system and "some patients may not make it."
The doctor told CNA that by Thursday evening, a total of 10 cases had been identified. Of these, seven are confirmed and three are probable.
Of the confirmed cases, four are hospitalized.
Asked about the preventive measures being taken, Mr. Aristodimou said that measures are being taken from the beginning for each case that is declared. "Tracing, spraying, door-to-door, to identify and eliminate outbreaks is being carried out and if necessary, it is repeated," he said.
He noted that the majority of cases are located in the Nicosia district.
