The Senate of the University of Cyprus calls on the Cypriot State to act in all possible ways that diplomacy allows, in order to implement the resolution of the General Assembly of the United Nations Organization for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire and the promotion of a dialogue between Israel and the Palestinian Authority to de-escalate the crisis and end the war.
It also calls on the Cypriot State to contribute with all the means at its disposal in the effort to provide humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people of the Gaza Strip.
In a resolution, the Senate unequivocally condemns the barbaric attack by Hamas, noting that elementary moral vigilance imposes our support for the people of Israel and "nothing can justify the unwarranted".
At the same time, the Senate emphasizes that the moral conscience "which does not serve geopolitical or other expediencies imposes the condemnation of the immeasurable reaction of the Israeli Armed Forces, which, with their continuous air strikes and ground advance in the Gaza Strip, have brought about the death of thousands of civilians and cause a humanitarian disaster of incredible magnitude".
"The imposition of collective punishment on millions of people in response to a terrorist strike by an extremist organization not only perpetuates and intensifies the vicious cycle of violence, but also violates International Law," it states.
The Senate in its resolution states that as long as the Palestinian issue remains unresolved, neither the people of Israel nor the people of Palestine will feel safe, especially when policies that incite violence and widen geopolitical tension make dialogue more difficult and conflict easier.
It also states that as has been pointed out by the UN and the political leaders of the EU and the US, the two-state solution – Israel and a Palestinian state – must, at last, be effectively promoted.
"As long as this solution is silenced or postponed, the violence will be perpetuated. The international community must contribute systematically and methodically to the realization of this perspective", he concludes.
