The President of the Parliament Annita Dimitriou stated that the UN and the entire international community must turn decisively towards Turkey, in order to work together to achieve a solution to the Cyprus problem.

Mrs. Dimitriou, who received on Wednesday the head of the Office of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Cyprus Jakhongir Khaydarov, praised the work carried out by UNDP Cyprus and its important contribution to the implementation of development programs, for the benefit of the entire Cypriot people.

According to a statement from the Parliament, Mr. Khaydarov referred to the work of the UNDP in Cyprus and to programs and projects of the Office that are in progress or planned and which concern, among others, the areas of improving the environmental, social and economic infrastructures , as well as the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals in Cyprus.

Also, the common will for cooperation, including the undertaking of joint initiatives, on topics of mutual interest, such as addressing climate change and integrating the gender dimension into institutions, was expressed.

Referring to the current situation with regard to the Cyprus problem, the Speaker of the Parliament underlined that the goal of the Greek Cypriot side is to end the current impasse and to resume the talks from the point where they were interrupted, in order to achieve a solution in accordance with international law, the relevant resolutions of UN Security Council and European principles and values.

Mrs. Dimitriou criticized Turkey's intensifying provocations, both on land and at sea, which, as she pointed out, demonstrate Ankara's contempt for international law and the United Nations resolutions on Cyprus.

The President of the Parliament stressed that the UN and the entire international community must turn decisively towards Turkey in order to cooperate to achieve a solution to the Cyprus problem based on these principles, which will create mutually beneficial conditions and make Cyprus an example of peace , prosperity and stability.

The President of the Parliament also referred to the importance of saving and protecting the cultural heritage of Cyprus, the destruction of which, as she underlined, is one of the dire consequences of the Turkish invasion and continued occupation.
