Given the ongoing chaotic situation in the area and for prevention purposes and appropriate preparation of the population, it is recommended that citizens remain vigilant, so that if necessary, they can take the following self-protection measures.
Specifically, in the event of receiving a text message on their mobile phones, citizens are asked to remain calm and follow the instructions below:
1. If there is a basement in their home, in a neighboring building or in the area where they are located, they should head towards it immediately on foot and calmly.
2. If they are indoors without a basement, they should remain inside the building, away from doors, glass and windows.
3. If they are outdoors, move to the nearest indoor location.
4. In infrastructures such as schools, hospitals and stadiums, the prescribed protocol of actions is being implemented by the competent personnel. Citizens are urged to avoid traveling by vehicle to these areas.
5. Until further instructions are given by the competent Authorities, citizens are urged to remain in underground or indoor areas and to avoid traveling outdoors, either on foot or by vehicle.
Furthermore, the Government, in collaboration with all telecommunications providers in Cyprus, is putting into operation from today a messaging system for valid and timely information of citizens, so that, when a potential security incident is investigated, they can take the necessary measures indicated by Civil Defense in such cases.
Finally, today at around 7 pm, a test of this new service, which is being introduced as a security and information measure for citizens by the Government, will be carried out, with the sending of a test message to all mobile telephony users in Cyprus.
