The Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment and the "Kios" Center of Excellence for Research and Innovation of the University of Cyprus announced the operation of the "Drip-Measure" application.
In Cyprus, according to data, the average water consumption is estimated at around 140 liters per person per day, while the corresponding European average is lower, at 124 liters. Cyprus has long faced a serious problem of water scarcity, and is among the five most vulnerable countries in the world to water stress. At the same time, 30% of Europeans face similar problems.
As stated in the announcement, the "Drip-Measure" application was designed to help households in Cyprus understand and calculate how much water they consume daily.
The increasing demand for water, due to population growth, tourism and agricultural activity, as well as the reduction in rainfall as a result of climate change, are intensifying pressures on Cyprus' water resources.
The measures being taken – such as desalination and upgrading water distribution systems to reduce losses – are vital.
However, according to the announcement, the prudent use of water and the avoidance of waste in our daily lives, where possible, remain equally important in addressing the problem.
The "Drip-Measure" application is aimed at the general public and calculates how much water each person consumes individually, compares consumption with the average in Cyprus, suggesting practical and measurable ways to save water, as well as advice for parents. The application is available for free, is easy to use and friendly to the general public, and is adapted to the needs of everyday life.
The application was developed by the Intelligent Water Systems team at the "Kios" Center of Excellence, based on research results from international literature. The team specializes in water resources monitoring and management technologies.
According to the announcement, the "Kios" Center of Excellence has made the application available free of charge to the Ministry, as part of their collaboration for a permanent solution to the water issue, with the aim of raising awareness among citizens and strengthening the responsible use of water.
The Ministry expresses its thanks to the "Kios" Center of Excellence for making the application available and their collaboration with the aim of jointly promoting it, strengthening the collective effort of sustainable management of water resources.
Finally, the Ministry invites the public to use the "Drip-Measure" application as a simple, yet essential step, contributing to the effort for responsible water use and addressing water scarcity in Cyprus.
