The nurses of the Larnaca Emergency Department are going on a spontaneous work stoppage on Monday, as a sign of protest, over an incident that, according to the nurses, involves verbal violence against a nurse at the Emergency Department of the Larnaca General Hospital.
According to a relevant announcement, PASYNO warns that it is not ruled out that next Thursday, March 27, 2025, nurses will withdraw from all TAEPs of General Hospitals, until appropriate measures are taken by OKYpY for their safety.
Nurses are withdrawing from the patient triage area at the Emergency Department of Larnaca General Hospital from 09:00 to 10:00, as a sign of protest over the latest incident of violence in the Department, they report.
"Patient triage is a particularly demanding process, which must be carried out under conditions that ensure both the quality of care provided and the safety of staff," the union says.
It also reiterates its concerns regarding the working conditions of the nursing staff who serve in patient triage.
As he notes, "unfortunately, there is an ever-increasing number of incidents of verbal and physical attacks against nurses, which creates an unsafe working environment that endangers the physical integrity and mental health of nursing staff."
PASYNO believes that "the absence of appropriate protection and security measures makes it impossible to carry out our duties in safe conditions", noting that the situation, especially in the TAEP of Larnaca General Hospital, becomes dangerous as triage is carried out in a container room.
He emphasizes that in a meeting held on March 17, 2025 between the General Executive Director of OKYpY and unions, there was an admission that there are problems in the TAEPs of all hospitals with a simultaneous commitment to immediately resolve them, something that has not happened so far.
Moreover, the PASYDY General Nursing Personnel Branch condemns the incident, emphasizing that once again they are witnessing such sad events, where colleagues, while performing their duties, "receive violent behavior and beatings from patients."
"Unfortunately," he adds, "once again the state's inability to protect healthcare professionals is evident, which is why we call on the police and all involved bodies to investigate the incident and for the offenders to be punished in an exemplary manner. Violence against healthcare professionals has no place in our society and will not be allowed to go unpunished."
