The Police in Larnaca are on alert due to the descent into Cyprus of fans of the Legia Warsaw football team, which faces Omonia Nicosia tonight at the GSP.
According to KYPE information, several Legia Warsaw fans are staying in hotels in Larnaca. The Police proceeded to prepare an operation plan in order to prevent any incidents. In particular, the Police on the beach front of Larnaca will have reinforced/increased policing and patrols will be carried out on Athens Avenue, in side streets, in the shopping center of the city and in hotel units.
The Police plan will be in effect from 17:00 until midnight, the time of completion of the football match.
Due to the fact that in the context of international police cooperation and at the request of the Cyprus Police, there was information about the arrival in Cyprus of a number of fans, including some, who are considered dangerous, for the football match between the teams OMONIA - LEGCIA, it was also requested the assistance of the Polish authorities. A number of members of the Polish police have arrived in Cyprus, to provide assistance in identifying potentially dangerous individuals to the Cyprus Police, which is alert and taking all necessary measures for the smooth running of the match and the safe arrival and departure of fans. On the other hand, Omonia proceeded to withdraw dozens of tickets that Legia fans had managed to secure online.
Legia Warsaw has been fined €100.000 by UEFA and banned from selling away tickets to fans for five European matches. UEFA proceeded with this punishment following the serious incidents caused by Polish fans in Birmingham, where on 30/11/2023 they faced Aston Villa. Although the punishment was imposed last year, Legia did not progress much in the competition and the punishment was carried over to this season.
