The Management Committee of an apartment complex in Larnaca is calling for an immediate investigation by the competent authorities, making a series of complaints that, as it states, concern, among other things, illegal electricity and water connections, exploitation of apartments without the owners' consent, arbitrary and overcrowded accommodation, as well as threats against its members.
In a statement dated October 2, the Management Committee states that, as legal owners of apartments and premises, they express strong concern and protest over incidents and conditions that, as they claim, are taking place in the common and other areas of apartment buildings.
Among other things, they denounce the possession of apartments with false, invalid or illegal rental contracts, without the consent of the legal owners, as well as the renting of apartments and the collection of income from third parties without the consent of the owners.
The Commission also reports indications of money laundering, through the collection of rents from non-beneficiaries, as well as illegal trading of electricity and water.
Reference is also made to illegal electricity connections, either directly to meters or through external wiring from apartment to apartment, which, according to the Commission, were checked by the EAC and deemed dangerous.
Illegal connections to the water supply network, water theft and the supply or trading of water from one meter to other apartments are also reported.
The Management Committee also reports that its members have received threats, while claiming that, after the disconnection of illegal connections in cooperation with the Water Supply and the EAC, they are reconnected. As it complains, there are cases where individuals shout and terrorize residents.
According to the announcement, the Commission has already filed a complaint with the Police against specific individuals, while complaints have been and continue to be filed by apartment owners.
At the same time, the Commission reports that, in collaboration with the Larnaca Building Inspectorate, it has appointed a civil engineer and is proceeding with laboratory tests to clarify the state of the statics of the apartment buildings. Measures have also been taken, following the recommendations of the Building Inspectorate, to protect residents and passers-by from falling plaster, while actions are being planned for repairs and renovation of the buildings.
The Commission argues that illegal or unauthorized use of spaces, overcrowding, arbitrary accommodation and possible interventions in public or private infrastructure create, as it states, serious issues of safety, hygiene, public order and protection of property.
He asks the competent authorities to immediately and fully investigate the complaints, crack down on illegality and criminally prosecute those who, as he states, are financially exploiting other people's property or trading in water and electricity.
He also requests a check on the legality of use and residence in the premises of the buildings, a check and removal of electrical and plumbing connections that, as he complains, are being removed and reconnected, as well as the taking of all necessary measures to protect the safety, health and property of the legal owners and tenants.
The Management Committee finally clarifies that the owners' protest is not directed against any ethnic, racial or religious group, but concerns, as it states, exclusively the legality, safety, proper functioning of the apartment building and the protection of the rights of the legal owners and users.
