Employees of the ground handling companies at Larnaca airport will go on a spontaneous work stop from 10 a.m. to 12 noon after mass layoffs, while a work stoppage is expected to take place at Paphos airport as well.

The reason for the two-hour work stoppage was the dismissal of dozens of workers by the companies.

Specifically, according to the unions, LGS and Swissport have issued redundancy letters to 156 workers, 111 from LGS and 45 from Swissport.

This provoked the anger of the unions, since they consider that the public assurances given by the Minister of Transport, Yiannis Karousos, that the inclusion of new companies in the field of ground handling, will not threaten existing jobs, have not been respected.

Unions and workers had warned that the aim of companies and the government was to work without contracts and without rights.
