Christoforos Michail spoke on the Front Page about the death of his son, George, from drugs and the absence of the competent Authorities in the struggle of users for drug addiction.
Initially, he said that his son "went off" drugs at the age of just 35, and had started using and selling hard substances in the last three years of his life. "We had understood what was happening, we had approached him but when you are used, you get sick, you are not yourself. It wasn't my child, it was the other George. Unfortunately, we discovered the groups of Agia Skepi late. Parents who have child users, go and join these groups to learn how to deal with their children. We were too late to learn."
He asked himself “what does the state offer these people? My son was caught by YKAN, but they kept him in the cell for three nights and released him until he was tried." According to Mr. Christoforos, the trial went from adjournment to adjournment and in the end his son never got to stand trial. The authorities' justification for not detaining him was the overcrowding of the Central Prisons. Mr. Christoforos explained that if his son had remained in custody, he would be alive today. "My son used to say in the neighborhood that when I go to prison I will go to Agia Skepi," he said.
He revealed that his son had beaten him and despite the fact that he did not want his son to go to prison, he had made a complaint to the TAE. Despite the phone calls to the TAE that Giorgos and his family are also being buried, the case did not proceed to court. He referred to a certain police officer with whom he was talking on the phone and managing the case, complaining that only when George died did he call him and ask him what happened to his son, expressing his condolences."
He explained that “users are always against their parents. He hit us not because of money to get drugs but out of reaction." "I will not bring my son back unfortunately. But I am doing this fight for the youth. Our state is no help at all. I think we also have a drug mastermind in the Government. I say it, I am not afraid, so that the youth may be spared. My power is to save the children of the world. Mine still, I don't want other youth to suffer the same and I am begging the President of the Republic to accept us for a meeting".
In an intervention, a friend of the family referred to the tragic fate of drug users, who will either be sent to prison or to a psychiatric hospital. He noted that the parents were trying until the last day to help him but were encountering obstacles.
