Where most expected that until the decisions on the appointment of new members to the boards of directors of semi-state organizations, in early 2024, the EAC should be limited to low-flying, waiting for the Government's decisions, two developments of the last few days change the facts:
A. The first development concerns the decision of the Minister of Energy Giorgos Papanastasiou not to wait any longer for the appointment of a new board of directors, as it has been clarified that such a thing will require at least another four months, not counting the adjustment time of the new administration. As there are many open and serious issues in the EAC, Mr. Papanastasiou decided to quickly promote their discussion and possible decision-making. This will be sought to be done in the context of a full-day workshop that will be held next Saturday 14/10 at the headquarters of the EAC.
B. The second development concerns the previous one letter from the EAC guilds to the board of directors, with which they express disappointment at the inability of the EAC leadership to provide solutions to chronic problems and inform - by way of warning - that the relevant bodies of the unions will meet in the coming days to decide how to manage the situation. The possibility to decide on dynamic measures is visible. Holding the all-day summit on Saturday may work to appease the guilds so that they still have some time credit for decisions.
What will they discuss on Saturday?
As he wrote yesterday filenewsAt Saturday workshop the Minister of Energy Giorgos Papanastasiou, competent officials of the Ministry of Energy and the Energy Agency, the members of the board of directors of the EAC and management staff of the organization will participate.
They will be put on the carpet issues such as the financial situation in which the Authority finds itself, the recent rejection by CERA the request for an increase in household tariffs to recover costs for the development program, the need for further penetration in the utilization of renewable energy sources, the leading role that the Green Transition Authority is called to assume, the urgent need to modernize and expand the supply and distribution network electricity, delays in supply and installation smart of cash, the critical and costly decisions to be made to replace aging and polluting units in Dekeleia, EAC's readiness to participate in the competitive electricity market, the gaps identified in the organization's staffing, delays in customer service, problems in the implementation of functional separation, etc.
The letter of the guilds
Yesterday the EAC unions notified all workers of their letter to the union. of the beginning. They mention, among other things, that in a meeting that took place on August 31, the administration had conveyed to the unions its disappointment with the results of the manipulations it had made with competent bodies regarding the issues of the organization and requested a reasonable period of time for a new attempt to find solutions.
More than a month has passed since then, the reports state, "and it appears that no progress has been made on the serious issues concerning the Electricity Authority. It is questionable", they add, "that while there were official decisions and positions on the serious issues that concerned us, these remain stagnant or facts are altered, as if invisible hands are directing or preventing them".
Wait on the handset
In the letter of the trade unions to the administration of the EAC, it is also mentioned that the non-decision-making by the Government and other bodies "does not absolve the EAC of its huge responsibilities towards the Cypriot people, for decisions that it had to take or initiate. Decisions concerning the activity of EAC in Renewable Energy Sources, the security of supply, the adequacy of production, the completion of the structure and the satisfactory staffing of the organization».
And the letter to d.s. concludes as follows: "Both for the projects and days of the EAC, as well as other state bodies and institutions, the competent bodies of our organizations are meeting to discuss and we will inform you of their decisions in the next few days".
